Gr 8 Up-Theodor Weiss, an emotionally injured scientist, was recruited by the German government to study a mutation of a deadly bubonic plague that has developed in Manchuria. Unknowingly, he brings a victim back to his mountain hideaway and tries to uncover the cause of the plague, seeking a cure. Once he has obtained the deadly Toxic from the victim, he flees the scene as he realizes that the German government wants to use it as a biological weapon. Arriving at the Southampton dock, he finds the world's largest ocean liner-the Titanic. When the Toxic is violently stolen, it begins to affect thousands of passengers, turning them into malicious, horrid zombies. With the help of Captain Edward Smith, Weiss and his team are forced into a Victorian massacre of the undead during the final hours of the legendary, ill-fated ocean liner as it speeds toward a deadly, disastrous iceberg. This fast-paced thriller reenacts the historical events of the tragic voyage through the lens of zombie anarchy. Plot-driven and told from multiple points of view, the novel will keep teens intrigued with gore and action. Readers will find that fiction and reality are a bit blurred as they continually try to guess which is which. A spine-chilling, nail-biting page-turner.-Krista Welz, The North Bergen Public Library, NJα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. From Booklist
Here’s an unusual premise: the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 accidentally saved the world from a zombie apocalypse. The story begins in Germany, where a scientist discovers that a virulent new plague might hold the key to curingmany deadly diseases. Fearing the German military will pervert it for a weapon, the scientist sneaks aboard the Titanic, hoping to take the virus to America, but he’s pursued by a German agent who steals the virus and unwittingly unleashes a plague of zombies. A small group of brave souls, led by Captain Smith of the Titanic, fight to kill the undead before they take over the ship. The authors do an excellent job of making this high-concept idea seem plausible (if you accept the zombies, of course). The descriptions of zombified mayhem are suitably scary, the language is period-appropriate, and fans of Titanic lore will enjoy seeing how the authors reconcile their made-up story with known events: Captain Smith’s reported absence from the bridge after the ship hit the iceberg, for example, is explained by the fact that he was below decks fighting zombies. An imaginative, very well told horror tale. --David Pitt

Review
"Fans of the undead should definitely seek this one out."
British Fantasy Society

"It doesn't really matter that this is the 100th year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, as the subject is always hugely popular. Deck Z, however, is no retelling of the research on the building or sinking of the ocean liner. The brilliant premise is this: take a biological weapon and run away with it on an ocean liner sailing to America. Dr. Weiss is a German scientist who discovers a plague that turns its victims into zombies. Though he wants to use his findings to create a cure for other diseases, the German army has other ideas. Planning to use the Toxic to start a zombie army, they anticipate that Russia will use all its funds to stop them and Germany can win the war.

When Dr. Weiss learns of the plot, he does the only possible thing?run for America. The problem is that he took the vial with him and left a trail for the Germans to follow. Once on board, the Toxic is released and zombies take over the E Deck, turning it into Deck Z.

Using known research and inserting fantastic events from the zombie plague, Pauls and Solomon create a riveting mystery. The band plays on to distract the zombies from boarding the lifeboats. More people die on Deck E than any other. The architect goes down with the ship. Who is after the Toxic? Can the passengers defeat the zombies? What happens to Dr. Weiss? Does he invent a cure? You'll have to read it for yourself?you'll never believe it until you do."

"The Titanic disaster gets a horror-flavored reinterpretation in this slim but effective debut tale of zombies on the high seas. In an attempt to keep a deadly plague from being weaponized by the Germans, scientist Theodor Weiss steals the only sample, destroys his notes, and flees, ultimately seeking refuge aboard the Titanic. He's tracked down by an agent of the German Empire who inadvertently releases the plague, turning passengers and crew into ravening monsters. As Weiss, Capt. Smith, and others try to contain the infection, the Titanic strikes an iceberg, compounding their problems. This fast-paced nightmare hits all the horror notes: a high body count, tense combat, moments of cowardice and valor, and even a plucky child in mortal peril. The cinematic atmosphere and attention to detail make this a better-than-average zombie mash-up."
- Publishers Weekly

"if you find yourself a fan of the history of the Titanic or a fan of a really fun zombie tale then you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy."
--Retroist

"A spine-chilling, nail-biting page-turner."
School Library Journal

"Be warned: this is no campy Pride and Prejudice and Zombies-style mash-up but a serious, gory horror story. History buffs will appreciate details about the Titanic's construction and the appearance of historical figures like Captain E. J. Smith (portrayed as a man of honor and a badass), designer Thomas Andrews, 'Unsinkable' Molly Brown, and White Star Line manager J. Bruce Ismay. But with all the bloody zombie action, zombie fans are the real intended audience here. This quick, creepy read is perfect for Halloween."
-The Horn Book

"Deck Z is an enjoyable romp for anyone who likes to mix history and genre horror"

Love Zombie stories? Read this. Love Titanic stories? Read this!
By Bonnie Ramthun
Deck Z is a surprisingly effective story of a zombie infestation on the maiden voyage of the Titanic. The best stories that weave real-life tragedies into fictional tales are ones that make you believe this really happened, and Chris Pauls succeeds brilliantly. The story begins slowly but the writing is excellent and once the story moves to the Titanic the pace is non-stop and the action builds until the inevitable but perfectly realized ending. This is one story where you don't mind the Titanic sinking! I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good zombie tale or for anyone who is fascinated by the Titanic. An excellent novel.

Do you enjoy rolling your eyes while reading dialogue?
By Michael Kent
I have to admit, this book was fun to read. But that's the most credit I'll give it.

Firstly, most of the dialogue reads exactly like it would if you asked a 5th grader to act out a zombie movie based on Saturday morning cartoons. It's easy and predictable, and often so stereotypical that it makes you wonder if it's meant to be satire.

There are major plot points that are badly contrived as the authors attempt to shoehorn the zombie story into the titanic story. For instance, when Weiss, the scientist is on the run to escape the German military, it is just assumed that he would hide by boarding the Titanic. Because it's a big ship? Wouldn't he be much more hidden boarding a vessel that wasn't on the front page of all the newspapers? In this book, everyone assumes that Weiss will board the ship and I never saw any true motivation for the ship to be involved.

I've never rolled my eyes so much reading a book. If this book were turned into a movie and they didn't change any of the dialogue, it would be turned into a drinking game.

So Ridiculous, It Works
By Samantha Glasser
There are two subjects that have remained popular for decades and the authors of Deck Z have combined them. This is Titanic with zombies, and it is so ridiculous that it works.

Theodor Weiss is a scientist who was enlisted by the German government to study a mutation of the bubonic plague which has arisen in Manchuria. He isolates an infected witch doctor and gathers a vial of the infection to study it in hope of finding a cure. The government has other plans and when he learns of their sinister intentions, he destroys his lab and makes off with the vial. He sees the massive Titanic as a perfect hiding place. Unfortunately, a government agent is on his trail and follows him onto the ship, stealing the vial and releasing it in the 3rd class areas.

This book has no regard for history and alters it as it sees fit to move the story along, but this isn't the kind of thing you read to learn something. Even the zombie lore is a bit questionable. But this book is pure fun and the short chapters and wealth of action scenes make reading quick and satisfying.
