Excerpt from Chapter One: Thoughts to Ponder before Setting Foot on Campus

You have finally arrived at law school. The buildings are historic and carefully constructed of sturdy, red bricks covered in centuries old ivy. Tall, white columns elegantly frame each entranceway. Incoming students are greeted by sprawling, green blanketed lawns with dogwoods lining the walkways. The salt and pepper-haired professors are distinguished gentlemen dressed in tweed cardigans bearing suede-patched sleeves. They grasp pipes tightly between their teeth and carry law books neatly tucked under their arms. They walk with their heads tilted at a thought-provoking angle, and as they quickly rush by, they lower their eyes, glance at you above their glasses, and smile curtly. You shyly grin back, turning your head with curiosity to catch a glimpse of who they are before they disappear into a swarm of new recruits.

You continue moving across campus along with the flowing current of eager students until you finally arrive at the school's main building, where an upper class person welcomes you with open arms, hands you your schedule, and escorts you to your first class. You quickly scour the room for a seat, eagerly looking around at all of the new friends you will make. Everyone is chatting away about their new endeavor and you avidly join in like an excited child. The professor enters, welcomes you, gives a brief description of the course, and sends you on your way with your first assignment and a list of all of the materials you will need. You search the building for your next class, which turns out to be a repeat of the last one.

In approximately one hour, your first day of law school comes to an end and you run off to meet some of your new friends for lunch. But, just as you approach the group, things become fuzzy. You begin to hear the distant sound of an alarm. It's getting louder and louder. You look around, scanning the parking lot to see if it's coming from someone's car. Your vision becomes even more distorted and you begin to feel light-headed. You try to continue across campus, but you feel as though you have lead in your shoes. Just as panic sets in, you wake up.

Back to Reality!
As pleasant as that experience was before your alarm clock went off, unfortunately, it was nothing more than a dream. Hopefully, you realize that before setting foot into law school, because if you are expecting your first day to mirror that experience, you might want to go back to sleep and keep dreaming. A more sensible option would be to read on and spend some time journeying into the real world of law.

Obviously, your decision to attend law school was not entered into lightly. The three or four years you spend there are going to force you to make life-altering changes. Your thought processes will forever be refurbished. Your perception of life will be turned upside down. Your friends and family will often wonder what is happening to you. Law school is not like college, where, after graduation, you may be filled with a sense of excitement about all of the ways to utilize your newfound knowledge. When law school comes to an end, you will most likely have a specific plan laid out and it will probably revolve around the practice of law. Law school is a place where you will be indoctrinated into a world where the factual outweighs the theoretical, where reality smothers the imaginary, where the truth has to be sifted out from beneath all of the lies, where the
good and bad seem to merge into a microcosm of uncertainty, and where you will be entrusted with the mission of sorting it all out and making sense of it. You have made a huge commitment and you believe that this is your true calling in life. This book will ensure that you succeed in making your dream come true.

So You Want to Be an Attorney
Prior to entering law school—in fact, even before you began filling out your applications—you most likely took a serious look at your reasons for wanting to become an attorney. Hopefully you recognized that being an attorney is not like what you have seen on shows like Law and Order. The truth is, weekly one-hour television series have very little time to present you with an accurate portrayal of what an attorney experiences on a day-to-day basis. You watch with excitement as crimes are committed, suspects are arrested, trials are held, and defendants are convicted—all within sixty minutes (including commercials). The end result is quick and painless, and you are left with the impression that the legal system is swift and stimulating, and that justice prevails almost all of the time.

In real life, the wheels of justice turn much more slowly. The commencement of a trial can take several months or longer, and the trial itself may last for weeks. Defendants who have committed crimes are not always found guilty, and when they are, their punishments do not always satisfy their victims. So, if you believe in the fantasy shows, it's time to come out of the world of make-believe and view what really goes on behind the doors of the legal world.

Got this just in time for our family Thanksgiving gathering. It was enjoyed by all who opened it and a great conversation starter when looking at the various amazing photos. We got the video as well and this coffee table book was nice to broaden our understanding of what we saw on the video. Really an impressive collection of stories. Man's ingenuity is boundless it seems.

TRUE Sidney Sheldon feel!!

I was so sad when Sidney Sheldon died, not only for his family, but for all of his readers. I started reading him back in the early 70's with his book Other Side of Midnight, and every time he had a new one out, I couldn't wait to buy it. Years later I realized Other Side was NOT his first book but Naked Face was. I enjoyed that also, but nothing got me hooked like that first book Other Side of Midnight. I have enjoyed all his other books (or so I thought) and while I am a VERY slow reader and not enough time.. I would finish his books WAY too soon!!!

When I noticed this book offered for 2.99, I thought, no there must be a mistake..he couldn't have written that.. then noticed the name Tilly Bagshwe listed as other author. Confused, but started reading, then was REALLY confused. This is SIDNEY SHELDON!!! As far as I could tell, I guess they found some unpublished transcripts and along with Tilly published them. You won't be disappointed!! My only sadness in this is that once the transcripts are done with.. well, won't think about that.. have to go search for any OTHER books!!!

A good lesson on how not to bottle up bad memories - they eat away at you like cancer!!

I have always enjoyed Sidney Sheldon's books. I have read most of them when Mr Sheldon was alive and those that Tilly Bagshawe has written.
However I find foul language unacceptable and not necessary. This is one of the main reasons that will give me pause when considering another book.

The storyline is very good with a nice little twist at the end. We all know that bad language is more prevalent in todays society than say twenty or thirty years ago. But what are we teaching the youth who come after us as prospective writers. Despite all of that, I enjoyed the characters in the book. Alexia is a strong women, many of us can see her mirrored in todays women in Parliament. Terry is a typical upper crust Brit who doesn't have a clue about the real world. Fans of Mr Sheldon will enjoy this book and hopefully more writers will come forward with this type of talent.

Sidney's smiling

Sadly, it has become common that when a famous and prolific author passes on, the family comission a new author to continue the series. Often it doesn't work well; I mean, how can it? Those authors acheived that level of readership and success because they were who they were. There are exceptions, of course. Ace Atkins is doing an amazing and well-received job with Robert Parker's Spencer series. And Tilly Bagshawe is astounding as the continuer of Sidney Sheldon's Memories of... series.

In Tides of Memory, Bagshawe once again takes on an epic story, full of sex, family mishaps, governmental interference, etc.... the stuff of legend for Sheldon. He has been referred to as the creator of the Romance/Thriller category and, as such, there is no one better to carry on the torch than Bagshawe who's own successes in both fields justifies the decision.

This story also reminds me of another great epic family author, namely Jeffrey Archer. Storylines and plots are similar, endings equally fulfilling. If you're a fan of Archer, or even the latest tomes from Ken Follett, then you should definitely pick up a copy of any of Bagshawe's works on behalf of Sidney Sheldon.

I have red many books in my life time, but never have I read a book like this... When you read of how Mother Dabney suffered for the cause of Christ, you will see why God used her like He did. As you read this book, you will see how the Saints of old paid a dear price for the annointing that rested upon there lives. All I can say is GET READY!!!!! Trust me, you will read it over & over again... What a blessing....

Quality Leadership Read!

Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's former spokesman and strategist, does a phenomenal job defining what it takes to win and lead well. His book Winners is truly a masterpiece on leadership. He manages to build a tapestry of failures and success from the likes of men like Nelson Mandela, Tony Blair, Lance Armstrong, Angela Merkel, Richard Branson, and so many others. The overarching theme of his book are its bookends, the OST Method - objective, strategy, and tactics. He suggests that these are the three critical components of every consistent winner's method of operation. Campbell insists that the approach to reaching objectives be simple, as well as the strategy and tactics to reach them. Making it absolutely impossible not to act consistently in response to the objective. Personally, I have re-adapted my own purpose statement, and the format of some of my goals, to reflect parts of his model. It has been rather helpful in actualizing some of those goals that were dormant. Overall, really great read!

Excellent description of what it takes to be a winner. A little too much name dropping in some ways but that is the purpose of the book.

Well-written and witty but...inconsistent

Sometimes sparks with tremendous writing brilliance, sometimes this brilliance evaporates. "We read books to find words for what we already know" (Forster). This book gives us those words only sometimes.
