The Making of Memento, by James Mottram

A behind-the-scenes look at the cult film that's taken critics and audiences by storm.

Christopher Nolan's Memento--the deceptive, ambiguous tale of a man with short-term memory loss consumed by the need to avenge the rape and murder of his wife--has already been hailed by critics as "a new classic" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone), provoked more discussion than any other film of 2001, and in a near-instant established Nolan as a major player in the industry.

In The Making of Memento James Mottram aims to take the reader--backwards, of course, like the story's structure--through the complete process by which this watershed film was brought to the screen. Utilizing interviews with Christopher Nolan and his brother, Jonathan (author of the short story on which the film is based), as well as members of the cast and crew, including Guy Pierce and Carrie-Anne Moss, Mottram details life on the set and the experience of filming. He also looks at the critics' reactions, explores the film's themes, and discusses its place in cinema history. In addition, a full set of credits is included along with a plot summary and the complete text to the original short story, as well as a look at the process by which it was transformed into a screenplay.

All totaled, The Making of Memento is the perfect companion to what is sure to be regarded as one of the first great films of the new century.

Interesting and intriguing look into the making of a classic
By N. Durham
James Mottram's "Making of Memento" is an interesting and intriguing look into the making of the modern day classic Memento. Offered up are excerpts from conversations with director/screen writer Christopher Nolan and actors Guy Pearce, Carrie Anne-Moss, and Joe Pantoliano, while offering a few different interpertations on the film itself. Mottram's style is crisp and clear and he never seems to go too far from his source material while offering up some interesting little known facts (the fact that Brad Pitt strongly considered and wanted to do the role of Lenny came as a shock and I have more respect for him now than I ever did before) that keep the reader interested for most of the time. Also included is the original short story by Jonathan Nolan (brother to Christopher) that inspired the film. All in all, consider this an essential companion piece if your a fan of the film or are trying to tie up some loose ends.

Remember Sammy Jankis
By monkeyrotica
Mottram's book offers a fascinating account of how Memento came into being, the trials its creators went through to get it distributed, and offers several interpretations of the film's meaning. It's also filled with interesting vignettes from movie set. The book roughly parallels the movie in that its chapters work backwards toward the source material, Nolan's brother's shortstory Memento Mori. However, its primary focus is on the construction of the movie itself, and how the disparate elements (acting, direction, writing, sound, music) came together to form the first truly great film of the 21st century. Mottram's writing style is clean, focused, and never overwraught. He doesn't make the mistake of overintellectualizing or overinterpreting the the film. This is a must have for Memento fans and offers keen insight as to how independent movies are made.

This guy doesn't know anything
By Heath Rumble
First third of the book provides unfounded, fallacious and misleading theories, subsequent two thirds is boring production details like what was shot on which day and obvious production details like the cast and what not.

Meeting the Enemy: The Human Face of the Great War, by Richard van Emden

A British soldier walked over to the German front line to deliver newspapers; British women married to Germans became "enemy aliens" in their own country; a high-ranking British POW discussed his own troops' heroism with the Kaiser on the battlefield. Just three amazing stories of contact between the opposing sides in the Great War that eminent historian Richard van Emden has unearthed--incidents that show brutality, great humanity, and above all, the bizarre nature of a conflict between two nations with long-standing ties of kinship and friendship. Meeting the Enemy reveals for the first time how contact was maintained on many levels throughout the War, and through its stories--sometimes funny, often moving--gives us a new perspective on the lives of ordinary men and women caught up in extraordinary events.

Review

“Remarkable . . . Richard van Emden is a World War I specialist who has found a niche, little explored, charting the personal contacts between Britons and Germans and their feelings about each other as the war progressed . . . Makes you think rather differently about the so-called ‘Great War For Civilisation.'” ―Daily Mail

“Richard van Emden's tour-de-force of research casts a fascinating new light on the human face of the Great War, allowing us into the strangest of meetings between British and German enemies in the trenches, behind the lines and on the home front . . . Extraordinary and often inspirational stories of comradeship between foes . . . Among many compelling photographs in this book, there is a grainy and heartbreaking image of a bowed and broken British prisoner tied to a post and left in the snow.” ―Richard Kemp, a former commander of British forces in Afghanistan, The Times

“From the horrors of the First World War battlefields are tales of extraordinary camaraderie between British and German soldiers.” ―Daily Express

“In Meeting the Enemy, the historian Richard van Emden shifts his focus from the grim fields of the First World War to the small, all but unknown instances of compassion across enemy lines.” ―New Statesman

“Richard van Emden uncovers myriad encounters between German and British forces . . . Van Emden's tales of friendship and honour between enemies only heighten the mystery of how these men slaughtered each other in their millions for four years.” ―Metro

“Meeting the Enemy is a meticulously researched account of contacts between the British and Germans during the war, mainly in the trenches, but also as prisoners of war and as 'enemy alien' wives. It is full of fascinating information and will appeal particularly to great war gluttons, the people who can't get enough of this stuff.” ―Observer

“An interesting chapter on what happened to those in mixed Anglo-German marriages . . . Van Emden wants to remind us that not all was hellish: there was also humour, mutual baiting and occasional easy-going relations. As well as direct contact during the Christmas truces, this book explores indirect contacts, using many unpublished letter and diaries.” ―Peter Conradi, Spectator

“A real cracker.” ―Literary Review

A flawed book
By Steven C. Anderson
I had expected from "Meeting" in the title more an account of soldiers from opposite sides encountering each other in various circumstances and, perhaps, discovering their mutual humanity. Images from "All Quiet on the Western Front" and of the historical Christmas Truce in 1914 came to mind. There is some of that, but it's not what most of this book is about.

Instead, the author relates in considerable detail the experiences of enemy aliens detained in the 'enemy' countries in which they lived or happened to be visiting when the war broke out (and to some extent the later experiences of POWs, mainly British). Many were people of German origin living in Britain, some of whom had become naturalized citizens. Others included Britons who had married Germans and under British law of the day automatically became German citizens even if they continued to live in Britain. In some cases these accounts are interesting, but in others they are detailed to the point of tediousness.

Although it contains much information, this is an uneven book, sometimes lacking continuity, and occasionally incorporating errors -- the most glaring of which, to a history buff, is the author's reference (on p. 298) to von Hindenburg as "chancellor" in 1917. Hindenburg was a field marshal in the German Army. He retired soon after the war, and later, in 1925, was elected president of Germany, in which office he remained until his death in 1934. Hindenburg was never chancellor, though in his dotage (at age 85) he unfortunately was pressured by a cabal of right-wing politicians into appointing Hitler chancellor in 1933.

In the end, the book simply stops. There is no effort to summarize or draw conclusions from the experiences of people on either side during the four years of mutual slaughter that was World War I.

Oh what a crazy war!
By T. Washington
Meeting The Enemy: The Human Face of the Great War is one of those books that tends to up end all my preconcpetions about this first global conflict.
It is usually overlooked (at least in Britain) that until the outbreak of WWI, the two countries had long standing cultural, religious( the patron saint of Germany is an English born missionary St.Boniface( and even familialy( Kaiser Wilhelm was not just a cousin of King George V- as both were of Czar Nicholas II of Russia- but a grandson of Queen Victoria and until 1917 the British Royal Family as known as Saxe Coburg- now renamed Windsor). Despite several petty and small minded attitudes towards the "enemy"(both civilians and soldiers), Richard van Emden also scrupulously records instances of moving humanity even in the extremity of war.

Living on the Home Front, by Megan Westley

During the Second World War millions of men left their homes and families to fight for their country. Meanwhile, those waving a tearful goodbye had to carry on. They dug their allotments, measured out their bath water, and presented their ration coupons for food and clothing. Through bombings and blackouts, the people of Britain did whatever they could to aid the war effort. In this detailed and well researched book, we learn what life was really like on the Home Front during the Second World War. Megan Westley enhances her account with her own experiences of 'living on the Home Front'. Over the last year, she has thrown herself into wartime cooking and rationing, espoused the mottos 'Dig for Victory' and 'make do and mend', sacrificed television, and even recreated an air raid. As well as providing a readable, intimate picture of day-to-day life during the era, Living on the Home Front is full of authentic wartime recipes for the reader to try, and tips on everything from growing your own vegetables to mending clothes

Something to think about
By Robert W. Gregory
Living On The Home Front could be considered an experimental living history experience. The author, Megan Westley decided to try and live her daily life as Britons did during the second world war. She divided the year intonsix two month blocks and would introduce new concepts into as they would have happened. For the British this was a total war and the government had a hand in every aspect of life. She had to struggle not only with rationing, but trying to make do with period recipes and what was available. Read the book to find out how it changed how she now views things and then think to yourself about what you might do to change your life.

A Helpful Account of Wartime Britain, Particularly Rationing
By Andrea Broomfield
Megan Westley's book is absorbing and more importantly, it is one of the most lucid breakdowns of the complicated system of British WWII rationing that I have seen. Because Westley wished to "live" the war on the home front, she had to become an expert in navigating not only between ration coupons and ration points, but also the constant shift of how much food per weight or volume was available--or not available--at any given time.

Anyone familiar with the wonderful _The 1940s House_ (Wall to Wall, Channel 4 television production) will likely enjoy Westley's book also, in that she subjects herself, to the degree possible, to the same wartime life that this reality TV family experienced. I appreciated Westley's honesty about her degree of success in trying to live a WWII life in 21st-century Britain, especially when she found her days too boring to write about, or when she had to take a break from the tedium just to come back to it with more commitment. At times, however, her experiment seemed so insubstantial in light of what was actually occuring in wartime Britain. She acknowledges this, however.

Finally, what I found most helpful was the clear year-by-year timeline of how the war started, progressed, and concluded. While Westley does not try to write a scholarly monograph, I would recommend this book to any historian, particularly a food historian, as a preliminary read and reference source befor delving into more detailed scholarship on this fascinating part of British history.
