An Excellent Learning Tool

As a foreign student who just started learning English 5 years ago, the verbal section is definitely my major obstacle to mastering the SAT. When I first took the PSAT, my verbal percentile was only a 49, but after working through all eight levels of Vocabulary Workshop (A through H) it has increased to a 99 (that was a year ago). Therefore I highly recommend this book to you (sincerely).
This book is a highly successful tool for guiding and stimulating systematic vocabulary growth for students. It has also been extremely valuable for preparing students to take the types of standardized vocabulary tests commonly used to assess grade placement, competence for graduation, and/or college readiness.
This book contains approximately 300 basic words, selected on the basis of currency in present-day usage, frequency on recognized vocabulary lists, applicability to standardized tests, and current grade-placement research.
The words in the book are organized into 15 short, stimulating units featuring pronunciation, parts of speech, definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and usage.

Great vocabulary-building series for grade school-SAT level

As a test prep tutor who specializes in exams which test vocubulary knowledge - the SAT, SSAT, ISEE, SHSAT and others - I am always on the lookout for helpful vocabulary-building tools. This series, while not particularly exciting, is excellent; I use the full set. Students in lower grades can start from the lower levels and work their way up, while high school students generally find the highest levels helpful. Each word list is accompanied by a good variety of review and reinforcement drills: sentence completions, mix-n-match, passage readings, etc.

Since this series is often used in schools, my luckier students get their test prep and school vocabulary homework done simultaneously!

My daughter is a sophomore in high school and uses this book all of the time for working on her vocabulary at home. It's the perfect size to lug around the house with her laptop and all of her textbooks and it has really helped with the vocabulary drills that she has to do each week.

Ten-year-old boy loved it and learned a lot

I handed this to my ten-year-old grandson today during a short car ride. When we arrived at our destination, he brought the book inside with him and continued to read it with great attention (including the non-comic fact sections) all the way to the end. Volume 1 is about the digestive system, so being a kid he especially enjoyed the bathroom humor, but he also was very interested in learning how everything worked. Highly recommended. The story is not completely resolved in volume 1--we just ordered volumes 2 and 3.

He won't put it down!!!!

Wow!!! I actually bought this to put until we finished our current series and my son has been reading it every free second of the day. He even chose it on his free time when he could have gotten on his tablet. I have a feeling he will finish it before going to bed tonight. He wanted me to hurry up and order the next one. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime. I don't want to dampen his love of reading.

ARTI KAPIL is currently Professor of the Department of Microbiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Deeper and More complex than the original...

Rain Fall ended with several loose ends around, "But if X and Y happened, wouldn't Z happen too?" There were several character holes, and a few logical consequences that needed to be followed.
Would the bad guys really believe John Rain's fake death? What would happen to Midori? Wasn't Harry traceable?
The book opens up more of John Rain's character, showing both his strenghts and some more obvious weaknesses. (Why can't spies like him not shag every girl they meet?) It also closes several loose ends hanging over from previous books. We learn more about John Rain's ruthlessness, as well as which rules he's willing to bend, and which not.
The plot gets complex near the end. You're left with enough "But what about this?" items to guarantee another episode. (At least I hope so!) If there's one downside of the book, perhaps a few of the supporting charachters (particularly in the CIA) were not as believable as I'd expect.
The equisite writing of Tokyo life continues to capture the reader. It'll introduce you in a very realistic way to one of the world's great cities. If you've been there, this should bring back some great memories.

I was suckered into buying this as a new title. The information does not clearly disclose that this is the previously published "Hard Rain" under a different name. Very bad performance by both the author and publisher.

If you have not read anything in the John Rain series you are in for a treat. A fantastic and action packed novel. I loved it.

Who does not like an exciting suspenseful book with a unique character who never fails to fascinate. When I finished the first book in this series (Rain Fall) I was hooked on this “John Rain” character. I had purchased three books initially, but decided to first read this exciting series in order. I just completed reading “Hard Rain” by Barry Eisler and loved it.

This book begins where the first one ends. John Rain had planned to move out of Japan and begin his life with a new name and identity, but a man in his business as a specialized assassin seems to always be in demand. Before he leaves an old nemesis from Japan’s version of the F.B.I. requests one more favor from John. There are a lot of twists and turns in this exciting page turning suspense novel and I never give away too much information about a novel because it spoils it for the reader. You can be sure that John Rain will be involved in a lot of tense situations where he must use his extensive martial art combatives skills.

If you love well-written novels with unique characters with plenty of action, you will want to read this book. I loved it.
