Maathai, a 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, presents a matter-of-fact account of her rather exceptional life in Kenya. Born in 1940, Matthai attended primary school at a time when Kenyan girls were not educated; went on to earn a Ph.D. and became head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Nairobi before founding Kenya's Green Belt Movement in 1977, which mobilized thousands of women to plant trees in an effort to restore the country's indigenous forests. Because Kenya's environmental degradation was largely due to the policies of a corrupt government, she then made the Green Belt Movement part of a broader campaign for democracy. Maathai endured personal attacks by the ruling powers-President Moi denounced her as a "wayward" woman-and engaged in political activities that landed her in jail several times. When a new government came into power in 2002, she was elected to Parliament and appointed assistant minister in the Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources. Despite workmanlike prose, this memoir (after The Green Belt Movement) documents the remarkable achievements of an influential environmentalist and activist. Photos not seen by PW.

I would recommend buying from this seller. The book was as expected, and delivered as stipulated. I am Kenyan, in USA for my studies and just wanted to read about Prof. Wangari Maathai and share with my lab mates. I have not been disappointing. A great book for people who want to understand struggles that some people go through to save a country. Kenya, a country in East Africa, where I was born, is a beautiful country, gained independence from the British in 1963, and has had self seeking leadership since. There is much glory in tribalism and those who rise above it get the wrath for abandoning their tribes. Such was the case of Wangari Maathai, who at one time got the full wrath of her tribe for not supporting their son president Kibaki. Many are the examples like Raphael Tuju who is a great leader but defied Odingaism etc. Kenya, overall has the most humane people, they share their personal space, kids are happiest playing soccer, neighbors share even basic commodities and that is what I love about this country.Kenyans are the most sacrificing as the common people are willing to die poor and wear torn slippers for the rest of their lives to support tribe dominance and not quality leadership.This is something strange to people of developed world, where you cannot win in your state if not seen as quality in regard to policy, as was the case with Romney.Policy is not issue in places like Kenya, tribe is.But People like Maathai only make us dream that just maybe, one day, we will move above our tribes and be one Kenya. I have hope, and hope is a great thing to have.

Inspiring but sometimes contradictory

I enjoyed reading Wangari Maathai's memoir, especially her childhood, and journey to early adulthood, and the final years of her work after she won the Nobel Prize. Her struggle to protect Kenyan forests and promote women's rights and advocate for environmental protection through the Green Belt Movement, especially under a repressive government regime, is admirable and inspiring.

Two things I struggled with as I read about her work with the Green Belt Movement are her tendencies to belittle Kenyans and portray herself as an absolute victim.

Because of her work, Maathai was constantly harassed by local government authorities. During these moments, she would appeal to her international networks of friends and colleagues to encourage the Kenyan Government to put the environment before destructive developmental projects, arguing that Kenyans are too busy trying to earn a living, or not as aware of environmental conservation as people in the West are. This is a contradiction with what she claims several times about generations past who had systems of protecting the environment. She even demonstrates it through stories about growing up amongst lush rivers and forested areas in the forties and fifties.

Finally, in the face of constant adversity, it may be inevitable to take the tone of a victim, constantly attacking the mechanisms and institutions that prevent one from doing their work. Maathai falls into this trap, which diminishes her heroism and struggle. As a woman who achieved such prominence, she could have held her head up a little higher, especially in her lucid writing, to give a more powerful account of the years she spent building the Green Belt Movement.

I first heard of Wangari on the Eleventh Hour, a documentary about climate change narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. I was so moved when she spoke that I had to find out more about her. This book has changed my life. When you read this you will see how when you are passionate about something nothing will get in your way. Wangari Maathai is the definition of perseverance. After reading this book, I desperately want to go to Africa and see these tree nurseries for myself. If you are passionate about the environment or African history you will enjoy this book.

Timeless wisdom

Couldn't resist reading this book after seeing the ads in SkyMall. I've spent so much time on developing business development acumen yet realized a greater and greater part of my roles is contract negotiation. So much of life is a back and forth and then compromise. The book is tremendously powerful and I've seen results right away in every area of my life. Highly recommended!

Absolutely loving this book. Clearly written by someone who knows (knew?) the subject inside and out, he gives very human and very relatable examples...a distinct contrast to other titles which spoke in a far more dry, corporate style. A great way to learn this subject.

About the Author
Aubrey Manning, OBE FRSE was Professor of Natural History at the University of Edinburgh. His main research and teaching interests were based around animal behaviour, development and evolution. He completed his DPhil under Niko Tinbergen and is now Emeritus Professor. He received the Zoological Society of London Silver Medal in 2003 for public understanding of science.

Marian Stamp Dawkins is Professor of Animal Behaviour at the University of Oxford where she heads the Animal Behaviour Research Group. Her research interests lie around animal perceptual worlds, with particular emphasis on animal suffering. She has authored, co-authored and edited eight books dealing with subjects ranging from basic behaviour to animal suffering and consciousness.

good description of animal behaviour

It's a good book that makes us understanding the basics of animal behaviour, and that there are multiple ways of analyzing a specific behaviour. You do get an insights of the evolution and development, but I miss the ecological perspective - the interaction with other organisms in the wild etc.

many typos and sloppy explanations

I taught an undergraduate course on complex analysis using this book several years ago. My choice of the book was partly based on the authors' outstanding reputations as good researchers. The authors make good choices of topics and they are experts in the subject. A casual perusing of this book might leave you impressed, but if you carefully work through the details of this book you will find numerous typographical errors and many explanations are sloppy. The proof of the Cauchy-Goursat Theorem is simply wrong. One of the proofs of a major theorem about Taylor series contained circular reasoning. I found it necessary to provide the students with my own typed lecture notes to replace various section of the book with explanations that weren't so sloppy. If you are looking for a good textbook at the undergraduate level, I recommend finding another book that was more carefully written.

A very good text!
The best description of this book is that it provides a comprehensive, classical treatment of the subject with a modern touch and serves ideally the needs of anyone studying Complex Analysis.
Starting from the foundations of defining a complex number, through to applications in the evaluation of integrals, the WKB method, Fourier transforms and Riemann-Hilbert problems, the book covers a lot of ground in an easy to follow style. The chapters are long, but logically broken down into digestible sections and interspersed with well illustrated diagrams, numerous worked examples and exercises. The end of chapter exercises provide further opportunity for reinforcing the methods and there's a useful section at the end giving brief hints and answers to selected problems.
Complex Variable analysis is treated from the definition of an analytic function and its relation to the Cauchy-Riemann equations, and in turn their application to an ideal fluid flow. The ideas of multi-valued functions, complex integration, and Cauchy's theorem are excellently treated, as are the consequences: the generalised Cauchy integral formula, the Max-Mod principle, and Liouiville and Morera's theorems.
The rest of the first part of this book, which is essentially pure mathematics, deals with Laurent series, singularities, analytic continuation, the Mittag-Leffler theorem, the ALL IMPORTANT Cauchy Residue Theorem, dealing with branch points, Rouche's theorem, and their application to Fourier transforms.
The second half starts off with perhaps the best I have seen on Conformal Mappings and their application to physical problems in Fluid Mechanics and Electromagnetism. Asymptotic evaluation of integrals covers methods like Watson's lemma, the method of steepest descent, and the WKB method.
A good combination of pure and applied mathematics, though the book avoids either the rigour of classical works such as Whittaker and Watson or the marvellously visual presentation of Tristan Needham.
Highly recommended!

The state's relations with its citizens were structured by rituals of celebration, thanking, and hatred-rites that required both political awareness and a demonstrable emotional response. Soviet functionaries transmitted this obligation to ordinary citizens through the mechanisms of communal authority, including workplace committees, volunteer agitators, and other forms of peer pressure, as much as through brutal state coercion. Yet, the populace also often imbued these ceremonies with different meanings: as a popular f�te, an occasion to get together after work, a chance to purchase goods not available on other days, and an opportunity to indulge in some drinking. The people also understood these political rituals as moments of negotiation whereby they would fulfill their "patriotic duty" but expected the state to reciprocate by providing essential services and basic social welfare. Nearly-universal passive resistance to required attendance challenges theories about the mass internalization of communist ideology.

Focusing on the last years of World War II and immediate postwar years, Yekelchyk shows how formulaic rituals under Stalin could create space for the people to express their concerns, fears, and prejudices, as well as their eagerness to be viewed as citizens in good standing.

Kemp does a good job realizing the Star Wars milieu and making it ...

Lords of the Sith follows Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith by just a few years. The Empire is at it's peak, and the Rebel Alliance has yet to be dreamed up. When a rash of terrorism breaks out on Ryloth, the Twi'Lek home world, the Emperor decides that he and Lord Vader will pay a personal visit to smash the early seeds of rebellion/terrorism. What follows is an engaging, swashbuckling romp through the Ryloth system that pits Vader against increasing odds, and an interesting look at the beginning of one part of the Rebel Alliance.

Paul S. Kemp does a good job realizing the Star Wars milieu and making it feel seedy and lived-in. He also does a really good job making it feel sci-fi, a dimension of it's identity that most Star Wars stuff chooses to ignore. Ships feel isolated and fragile in a very good way, technology feels embedded within the world, and honestly, I really loved that side of Lords of the Sith.

I also enjoyed reading about Vader, for the most part. He's written with surprising depth, and his relationship with the Emperor is really unsettling. It's both disarming and disgruntling to see their emotionally-abusive relationship played out like that; and yet, Vader doesn't become the victim in the way the prequel movies tried so hard to paint him. He is fully aware of his actions, their implications, and his ultimate monstrosity. Indeed, he revels in it, believes that this is the role he was cast into by the Force--that he is the bloody hammer necessary to make everything else right. It's twisted and messianic and conflicting in a good way. I do wish that Kemp had been given a few more Force-related descriptions in his bag: the biggest letdown of Lords of the Sith is that the force-users are written with a numbing repetition.

Though the book does feature the titular galactic bullies as, if not protagonists, than certainly narrators, most of the book is actually told from the perspective of the Twi'Lek terrorists, or the Imperial Colonel Belkor, whose station on Belkor has led to an escalating corruption in pursuit of personal power and accolades. Vader accounts, as a narrator, for less than a quarter of the book, with the Twi'Leks taking at least half, and Belkor the remaining third or so. No narrator is particularly weak, though the politick of Ryloth did wear on after a while. When Kemp finally brings everything to a close, and the remaining narrators are standing on top of each other, it's a marked relief.

This is a rock solid entry in the new Star Wars canon. It treats the sci-fi aspect of the series with much more respect than Chuck Wendig's Aftermath, or the Lost Stars book, and bridges the gap well between the prequels and original trilogy. I'd recommend it without reservation.

Fantastic!

This was a great addition to the Star Wars Universe. The writer managed to create a sense of urgency and set up a "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" style standoff by the end of the book.

It also helped that I recently began watching the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series. One of the principle characters in the book - Cham Syndulla - is featured in the series. It was a cool coincidence as I had no knowledge of the character beforehand. Since Star Wars: Clone Wars predates the story in Lords of the Sith it provided an informative background for Cham's motivations.

I love this book. This is a great story. It made some very stressful days much more bearable for me as I always looked forward to the moments during my day that I could refrain from the daily chaos of my career and dive back into this story. Kudos to the author, Paul S.Kemp.

I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end.

Best Novel in the New Canon Yet

Lords of the Sith is easily the best novel in the new Star Wars canon to date. It doesn't quite reach the height of some of the old Expanded Universe (now Legends) novels like Darth Plagueis and Shatterpoint, but it comes close and is very promising if this is the direction Star Wars novels are headed.

The main characters on the "good" side show complexity, trying to stay on the right side of the thin line between freedom fighter and terrorist - the line between murder and killing an enemy. The Imperial cast is equally complex, showing the reader insight into their own drives and motivations, from the stalwart loyalists, self-centered power grabbers, the Emperor's personal guards, and a has-been moff.

The new canon has done a great job of increasing the diversity in Star Wars, and this is book is no exception. The female moff, in one sentence, is said to have taken a downward spiral after the death of her wife. That's it, one word switched from husband to wife, and the reader knows that we are now dealing with a moff in the Star Wars universe that happened to be a married lesbian. However, the story does not revolve around this at all, and it never comes up again or distracts the reader from the story. To me, this is the perfect way to make Star Wars more inclusive in the 21st century - include diverse characters that reflect our modern life without needlessly writing stories about things like race and sexual orientation when they aren't central to the story. I hope this trend continues.

Now, on to what we all came for: this book shows a lot of Vader and Palpatine doing what they do best. Vader is a killing machine, constantly trying to guess his master's motivation behind his words and commands. On the other hand, Palpatine is always one step ahead of Vader, and seems extremely adept at predicting his thoughts. This is a perfect portrayal of a post-prequels/Clone Wars Vader, one that is constantly reminded of those he lost. We get to see how Vader copes with his memories in a sad way. It leaves you empathizing with the character while you are simultaneously repulsed by his actions.

My only quibble is that Vader and Palpatine sometimes do things (leaping, spinning, flipping, lightsabering) that are a little extreme. I like to see the Force act in more subtle ways, and it can get a little video-gamey in this book.

What a wonderful book. Ms Estwick has done a beautiful job of bringing the scriptures alive and including her country's dialect as she shared her remarkable story of faith ,simplicity and Divine healing . I am inspired to buy a hard copy,and do some serious research on the readings and authors she mentioned.good luck ! Awaiting your next work.
