Thomas Paine (February 9, 1737 [O.S. January 29, 1736] - June 8, 1809) was an English-American political activist, philosopher, political theorist, and revolutionary. One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, he authored the two most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, and he inspired the rebels in 1776 to declare independence from Britain. His ideas reflected Enlightenment-era rhetoric of transnational human rights. He has been called "a corsetmaker by trade, a journalist by profession, and a propagandist by inclination". Brilliant Religious Discussion

A brilliant work that reads almost like a modern piece of writing. The sheer scope of evidence offered as well as the arguments presented make this a must-read for anyone who seriously contemplates the role of religion and belief in our scoiety. I would suggest this as a must read for everyone preparing for a life in the religious sector - whether minister or priest or rabbi or imam. These are not necessarily individual arguments that need to be addressed (though they are pretty staggering as such); but taken as a whole, a truly "person of faith" needs to explain (to himself, if no one else) how these items Paine presents fit into the beliefs held so strongly.

Shape my current philosophy

Paine does a good job of dissecting Christianity and putting it in perspective. Coming from a catholic upbringing I found this to be an influential book in reforming my opinions to be opinions and not regurgitated church speak. I'd recommend reading Chirstopher Hitchen's "God is Not Great" afterwards for an even further atheistic book. Hitchens debates a few of Paine's points on the ability of any god to be benevolent.

On a non theological point, I generally love Thomas Paine's writings. An obscure pamphlet that I enjoy is "Agrarian Justice." It sort of pushes for what is the modern movement of basic income.

Thanks, I Needed That!

At 53, I'm finally willing to listen to this great book. Loved the first part, kinda skimmed the second part because it got little tedious in the details as he did a more than thorough job of exposing inconsistencies in the Bible. His message is very good for those of us challenging our inherited beliefs, yet think he could've toned down some of the inflammatory language and perhaps would've had more people at his funeral. As Mark Twain wrote-"I must studiously and faithfully unlearn a great many things I have somehow absorbed." This book is helpful if you, like me, have a lot to unlearn.

About the Author

Aida Audeh is Associate Professor of Art History and Chair of the Department of Studio Arts & Art History at Hamline University, Minnesota. She has published widely on French artists' interest in Dante in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with articles appearing in such publications as Annali d'Italianistica, Dante Studies, Studies in Medievalism, and the Journal of the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Center for the Visual Arts at Stanford University. She is a contributing author to Dante in the Nineteenth Century: Reception, Portrayal, Popularization (Bern: Peter Lang) and to Dante in France (Florence: Le Lettere.

Nick Havely is Professor of English & Related Literature at the University of York, UK. His main research interests are in late medieval literature and in Anglo-Italian literary relations. His earlier books included Chaucer's Boccaccio: Sources for Troilus and the Knight's and Franklin's Tales (an anthology of translations, 1980, 2nd edition 1992); and editions of The House of Fame (1994) and Chaucer's Dream Poetry (1997). His work on Dante and his reception includes a number of recent books: Dante's Modern Afterlife: Reception and Response from Blake to Heaney (1998); Dante and the Franciscans: Poverty and the Papacy in the 'Commedia' (2004, reissued in paperback by Cambridge University Press in 2008); the Dante volume in the Blackwell Guides to Literature series (2007). He is also currently working on a study of Dante in the English-Speaking World, from the Fourteenth Century to the Present which is contracted with Oxford University Press.

Our Future Awaits!!!

THE BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET KINK BOOK 4 started off where the previous installment ended with Mica and Knox getting the shock of their lives hearing Paul Banning's confession.

Despite the bombshell that Mica received she didn't let it ruined what she and Knox were trying to build. And even if she wanted to, Knox wouldn't leave her dwell in the past.

Speaking of Knox, he too received some life altering information from his mother who hadn't spoken a word in two decades. What Knox learned shattered him but Mica wouldn't let him crumbled no matter what she had to do.

Mica and Knox saw each other through their troubled times, they were each other's safe haven and strength. Loved how Knox's brothers and fur babies took an instant liking to Mica.

Knox and Mica finally got their HEA, they chose not to hold on to the past and moved on with their lives together, planning a future.

Lisa Ladew did great, I'm looking forward to the rest of the Rosesson brothers' stories....I recommend this book.

I could barely stand to put it down long enough to work, cook, drive.. ;)

I am soooooooooo happy,. I read book 4 in record time, I could barely stand to put it down long enough to work, cook, drive.. ;) Book 4 is an awesome conclusion to a wonderfully romantic suspense novel. The stalker, Bailey is in hiding but life goes on for our 2 main characters. Knox and Mica are happy. The only cloud over their heads is waiting for him to turn up when least expected. Knox is on it and has his brothers backing them up. I loved the ending, happy couple with an unresolved issue. I look forward to reading more about them in future books about the brothers.. I see plenty of good reading on it's way. Lisa Ladew has a wonderful talent for spinning romantic suspense and as always, she delivers.

What a read!!!!

Words can't describe the thrill ride you will go in this book. I love this couple and the past and present about their story. Very suspenseful and engaging. You won't put it down once you start it. When you think you know one thing you find yourself wrong and your mouth dropped open. I find myself talking to the the book and saying NO NO NO !!!! Def some heart stopping moments. Read this and all her series. Well worth the read.

A must for collectors of anything electrical

I'm not into reviewing. I've bought many books from Amazon over the years, ranging from worthy-of-a-book-award down to boring. But this is the first time I feel like writing a review. This book is a must for any collector of anything electrical. It is spectacular in every respect. A readable balance of clear but authoritative text and a huge number of magnificent photographs, most in color, of real antique electrical items, many of them very rare, on heavy glossy paper. The main sections are:

The Dawn of the Electrical Age: Very early artifacts of electricity and magnetism.
Electricity Sparks Invention: From Galvani in 1780 to Faraday in 1831 to Morse in 1837 to Alexander Graham Bell in 1875 to Edison and Tesla in the eighteen-seventies and beyond, with great heavily illustrated sections on incendescent lighting, electric motors, electrical measuring instruments, the telegraph, the telephone, and even many electro-therapeutic quackery devices such as the electro-magnetic hairbrush and the bi-polar electric belt with suspensory pouch (I presume for men).
The Wireless Age: Again heavily illustrated, with sections on the electromagnetic spectrum, the discovery of radio waves, early detection of radio waves, Marconi and his many early wireless devices, vacuum tubes, and early radio including military radio in World War One.
Radio Enters the Home: With a huge number of illustrations of radios from the 1920s and 1930s.
The Golden Age of Radio: With an equally huge number of illustrations of radios from the 1930s and 1940s.
The Jones Gallery: About vacuum tubes, ranging from early ones to the one used on the Lunar Orbiter III to photograph the dark side of the moon in 1968.

A "must have" for anyone interested in radio and electricity

John Jenkins has created a visual and descriptive masterpiece with his most recent book. The photographs of historiclly important technology treasures from the Museum of Radio and Electricity in Bellingham, WA are unsurpassed in showing every detail of technological development from the beginning of the age of electricity. My favorite parts are those that relate the beginning of the wireless radio age. If you are an amateur radio operator I think you would enjoy this book immensely, I know that I have. And if you happen to be enamored with the age of vaccuum tube technology you will enjoy the stunning photographs and descriptions of the Al Jones tube collection. You can't buy much of any lasting value these days for $30....this book is a rare and worthwhile exception.

Superbly illustrated with more than six hundred historical photographs of electrical apparatus that begins with discoveries of the 17th Century upon which was based the subsequent invention of electric motors, electric lights, the telegraph, the telephone, and the invention that created a true electricity-based mass culture, the radio, "Where Discovery Sparks Imagination" by John D. Jenkins (Board President of the American Museum of Radio and Electricity) is an informed and informative 224-page compendium that is a fascinating survey of the ingenuity and artistry that went into these developing technologies from their inception onwards. A work of impressive historical scholarship reinforced with pictorial images of machines, gadgets, appliances, and even toys, "Where Discovery Sparks Imagination" is a brilliant presentation, a unique history, and a welcome addition to personal, academic, and community library collections.

Silla: A breathtaking gift of art and art history from the Met in New York

With the publication of "Silla: Korea's Golden Kingdom," the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has added significantly to the still modest body of English-language scholarship on Korean art. Working with the National Museum of Korea and the Gyeongju National Museum, the Met has mounted an exhibition that focuses on the ancient Silla Dynasty which progressively established dominion over the southern half of the Korean peninsula between 57 BCE and 935 CE. As those familiar with Asian history will appreciate, the latter half of this period also saw the existence of the Tang Dynasty in China, the advancement of the Silk Road linking Europe to Asia, the early spread of Buddhism, and the foundations of Japan's imperial history. These developments either influenced or were themselves influenced by the Silla Kingdom.

"Silla: Korea's Golden Kingdom" opens exactly as one would wish, with a two-page map that stretches all the way from Italy in the west to Korea and Japan in the east, with the Silk Road's land and maritime routes marked in. Introductory material also includes a timeline that correlates early Korean, Chinese, and Japanese historical eras. What follows are seven substantive chapters that begin with a look at the nature of the Silla Kingdom within Korean history. The chapters then consider Silla more broadly, within the context of the steppe and continental cultures that existed to its north and west, foreign trade, and the rise of Buddhism.

Every page in these chapters is impeccably researched and written with admirable clarity, as we have come to expect from a Met publication. Last but certainly not least are color photographs of nearly 100 objects, many of them grave goods from the royal mound tombs in Gyeongju and a number important enough to have been designated National Treasures of Korea. These objects, breathtaking in quality and beauty, can be seen at the Met through 23 February 2014.

It's about time!

Korea has a fascinating cultural and artistic heritage that the museum-going-world knows little about. It's about time that a major institution presents a first-rate exhibition on one of their most important formative historic periods, and succeeds in such a magnificent way. The objects chosen for the exhibition are first-rate, and given the miserable survival rate of prime examples due to the wars and conflicts within Korean throughout its history, they are remarkable. Many visitors to the exhibition who have never had the pleasure of visiting the National Museum of Korea and it's various branches in South Korea probably knew little or even imagined the staggering visual and artistic wealth held therein. The organization of the exhibition, also is first-rate. The catalogue for this exhibition, which is this book, is well written, scholarly, but not erudite or scary to the ordinary reader, nor does it talk down to them, rather it presents facts and information in a clear and lucid fashion that is interesting and even innovative in sections. All in all, it is well done.

Silla Kingdom an underestimated treasure

The book is very well written and offers a very comprehensive overview of this unique cultural period. It shows clearly the influences of Asian Neighbors on its art, and the amazing range of this civilization's influence on Japan among others.

Korean culture is unfortunately not broadcast enough, and it is time to restore these fascinating stories to the forefront of Asian development.

i don't think 2017 version is better than 2016 or 2015

To be honest, i don't think 2017 version is better than 2016 or 2015..

2017 version contains only a few MCQs, no more than 5 for each course. In addition, the explanation for each question has been reduced. In the prior version, the answers descripes why A, B, C, D are correct or incorrect, however, 2017 version only explain why a certain choice is correct, and never mention why the other choices are wrong.

I really don't like it. I prefer 2016 version

This book has beautiful pictures of "minimalism" in fashion over the past 100 years -- I put "minimalism" in quotes. because in this book the word is used to describe simplicity rather than something more rigorous. The text, however, is disappointing. First, there's the print -- an elegant grey in tone, difficult for my old eyes to read. Second, it's got a lot of current art speak in it. Finally, it has less on the Japanese influence than seems appropriate to me. Still and all, lovely pix for fashion addicts.
