About the Author
Bruce F. Chorpita, Ph.D. is currently Professor of Psychology, at the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University at Albany, State University of New York and held a faculty position with the Department of Psychology at the University of Hawaii from 1997 to 2008. From 2001 to 2003, Dr. Chorpita served as the Clinical Director of the Hawaii Department of Health's Child and Adolescent Mental Health Division. Dr. Chorpita is widely published in the areas of children's mental health services and childhood anxiety disorders, and he has held research and training grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, the Hawaii Departments of Education and Health, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

MATCH Therapist

I have been working as a Match Therapist just a little over 2 years now with the research project that has utilized the English version of Match-ADTC. I am amazed as to how much I have learned using the skills in this book and have proven a reliable source in helping my clients overcome their anxiety. I have not had the same opportunity to practice the other modules as well as the anxiety module but I am really excited to see the book in Spanish, especially since all my clients had Spanish speaking parents. Yey! No more fumbling my words as I look forward to receiving this Spanish copy. I highly recommend this book in Spanish and English as a pair as a tool to use in therapy with children and families. Thank you for the years of growth and consultation in learning this model Dr. Chorpita.

[Surprisingly] not for Giger fans

Do your research on this one. Will likely be dissapointing to the vast majority of Giger enthusiasts, especially at this price and being printed so shoddily. Contains no Giger artwork besides the cover, which as another reviewer notes is an enlarged low-resolution image which appears pixelated.

Not an art book!

This book is not another book of art like Giger's other works. This book is a so called book of incanatations and spells for witchcraft enthusiasts. There is no artwork at all in this book, so fans of his work be warned before buying.

A Must Read For Tweens And Teens

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

A 5-STAR STORY WITH A 6-STAR HEROINE, BUT 2-STAR NARRATIVE WRITING; I RECOMMEND THE YOUNG ADULT VERSION INSTEAD

The story of Malala Yousafzai is remarkable in every way, and she is an amazing, courageous young lady. Her story is astounding; the circumstances that she was forced to live through, and her bravery and sense of purpose, brought world focus to the tragedies in her homeland. This reviewer recognizes the essential significance of the subject matter and the tremendous role model which Malala is, but the story itself was poorly written. In televised speeches, Malala is more compelling and has much more presence than this narrative provided her. The writing is extremely choppy, going backward and forward in time with confusing and unbalanced frequency. The narration is rambling throughout and repetitive in many places, It reads like a poorly edited young adult novel. Perhaps the desire to preserve Malala's recollections as closely as possible to her notes resulted in lack of editing? I read this book along with a team of teachers and four high school classes of students, and nearly everyone I worked with agreed that the story was outstanding, but the writing was so poor it made the book a difficult and frustrating read.

Ironically, the newer, young adult version of this book is far superior in terms of structure and style, and is therefore much smoother and more readable. The YA edition is called I AM MALALA: HOW ONE GIRL STOOD UP FOR EDUCATION AND CHANGED THE WORLD. In my opinion, this YA edition is superior to its adult counterpart, and I recommend it highly. The YA version is co-authored by Patricia McCormick, an accomplished and decorated YA novelist (and a National Book Award finalist) who has written compelling novels on a number of tragic and realistic topics which affect young adults in various parts of the world. Her influence in helping frame Malala's story in unmistakable and eliminates many of the pitfalls which the title being reviewed here was not able to avoid.

This (adult) edition of I AM MALALA is a 5-star story with a 6-star heroine, but 2-star narrative writing.

An amazing story from a remarkable young lady

I downloaded this book minutes after midnight on its first day, and 14 hrs later I have finished it cover to cover. I have been married to a Pakistani for 14 yrs, and have repeatedly asked my husband, "Why do the Pakistanis put up with this"...or that as situations have arisen over the yrs. The best answers I have gotten are the same mentioned in this book. Corruption & fear. It is so wonderful to see a father & his daughter take a stand for their right for something as simple as going to school that so many of us take for granted every day.
Although I have never been to any of the 'villages' I have visited Pakistan once & was a bit surprised by the conditions in one of the larger cities. The Swat valley does sound beautiful thanks to the wonderful mental pictures I got from the very vivid text. It really is ashame that this area is no longer available for tourist, be they Pakistani or international. I also accompanied an in-law to a doctor's while in Pakistan, and as a retired RN, I am really amazed that Malala survived this ordeal. I have little doubt that it definitely was not her time to die no matter what the Taliban tried. God....Allah....must have other plans and no man will change that.

The article on Compacted Graphite Iron is new to the Handbook. Both of these contributions were authored by D.M. Featuring more than 75 graphs and 372 references, this 48-page article explores the causes and effects of both thermal and environmental degradation on a wide variety of steels. Compared with the 9th Edition on the same subject, this represents a nearly tenfold increase in coverage.

A Captivating Summer (Job) Read

Time and time again, I realize that I should have consulted the ASM Handbook earlier and more often during research. While it does not include the most recent research in the field (last update was in the 90's) it is a great primer for background knowledge in various metals phenomena. Each volume is a massive tome, but they offer a prolific "specific usefulness" factor (both by weight and by volume), so do not be intimidated.

And while some may claim that you're not reading them for the plot, the ASM guides offer many plots, tables, and micrographs for your consulting pleasure.

Let's face it. You don't have to like this book. You're not buying it for the plot. You either need it or you don't.

Plenty of info for the materials guy or gal. I bought it used.

A Must Read for Newbies!

Every help desk manager ended up in the HD business by accident; none of us majored in help desk management or customer service in college. When you start running a HD, you realize that(a) you have almost no idea what you're doing and (b) you look for every book, article and video you can find to help you.

Happily, Phil Gerbyshak & Jeff Brooks have done new managers, and all of us in the support business, a great service by writing "Help Desk Manager's Crash Course." It is exactly what newbies' need during the first 90 days on the job and thereafter as a reference tool. It is well written, imaginative and full of good ideas for new managers. I am not too proud to admit that, even as a veteran of this business, I use it regularly when I'm looking for a fresh perspective on old problems and when I need a reminder of what's important.

Phil and Jeff are experienced managers that know what they are writing about and they write very well! This is a dynamic, exciting, serious book that will be a life perserver for new managers and a superb refresher for "old" ones. If you're a help manager, buy this book, read it once and then read it again! You'll be glad you did and so will your employee's and your customers!

As someone that has been in the industry a long time, we often need a refresh even if we "know it all". This book will remind seasoned managers of the meat and potatoes of our business, and help the "newbies" to get up to speed in record breaking time. And the price? Excellent companion for Garcia Marquez

The book allowed me to understand the complexity of the plot in One Hundred Years of Solitude. It also provided me with enough historical background information for understanding the short stories within the book. My favorite, however, was the chapter on Love in the Time of Cholera. I fully recommend this book for the reader of Garcia Marquez who lacks the background knowledge on Latin American issues.
