Grade 3-6-With girls reaching puberty at younger and younger ages, Ready, Set, Grow! is a timely and important book. In a consistently sensitive and encouraging tone, Madaras reassures preadolescents that the changes they know are approaching or they are beginning to experience are normal, natural, and cause for celebration. Humorous sketches illustrate the emotions and stages of puberty, and keep the tone light. Individual chapters devoted to breast development, body hair, height and weight spurts, body odor and pimples, genitalia, internal reproductive organs, and menstruation gently but thoroughly provide facts and advice on recognizing and welcoming growth and development. The author weaves in a little humor and acknowledges the conflicting emotions that accompany puberty. Quotes and questions from girls she meets in her travels and correspondence are included, giving voice to the uncertainties in a reader's own mind. "What's Up Down There? A Look at Your Private Parts" is a particularly on-target chapter, taking readers on a tour of their own genitalia with the help of a mirror, identifying each part of their sex organs. Madaras's earlier "What's Happening" books, written for older readers, include discussions of romantic feelings and dealing with unwanted sexual attention. Laurie Krasny Brown's What's the Big Secret? Talking about Sex with Girls and Boys (Little, Brown, 1997) takes a humorous approach to explaining intercourse as well as puberty to boys and girls.

Gr. 2-5. In her revised edition of The What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls (2001), Madaras notes that girls are reaching puberty at a younger age than in the past. In this small, square volume, Madaras offers a spin-off guide directed to the youngest girls who are anticipating or undergoing the body's first changes. Goofy cartoons illustrate the upbeat, reassuring chapters about menstruation, breast development, and the reproductive organs as well as grooming issues, such as skin care, body odor, and shaving. There are medical tips just for the girls in this age group, who, for example, need to treat cramps differently from older young women or adults. The short chapter about sexual harassment is somewhat vague, but it offers solid advice in firm language: "Don't accept excuses like 'Boys will be boys.'" Parents and kids seeking information about sex and birth control will need to consult another guide, but this one is a friendly, accessible introduction to puberty that young girls can read alone, not just with parents. 'Maelstrom' by Jordan Hawk begins with Whyborne in the library, presenting a brief summary of past events in his endearing, cross way, bemoaning the fact that with those endeavors his anonymity he had so long nurtured is now gone forever. Whyborne is with other dignitaries at a presentation to accept a large donation of rare books. Although it's not in Whyborne's job description, he's asked to help sort through the books in order to pluck out the potentially dangerous arcane ones for fear of having entities such as the ones they encountered in Egypt appear in Widdershins.

At the presentation, Whyborne is accidentally, on purpose, doused with a glass of champagne by Dr. Bradley, a colleague and nemesis of his. Fueled by jealousy, he constantly torments Whyborne with his insinuations concerning his relationship with Griffin. Just as Bradley is issuing his latest barb, Griffin appears behind Dr. Bradley, startling him, Whyborne couldn't be more relieved to see him. Griffin 'rescues' Whyborne and whisks him away, ostentatiously to help Whyborne dry his shirt. In truth Griffin is “uncomfortably” attracted to the sight of Whyborne being aloof and collected with his colleagues, when he knows under that fine veneer of pretentious indifference, there is a fire just waiting to be stoked and simply can't wait to be burned. When they get to Whyborne's office, that's exactly what happens.

In his examination of the newly-acquired books, there is one of particular interest, the Wisborg Codex, with writing even Whyborne can't decipher. The Wisborg Codex becomes the central point of a series of events involving obtaining the tome, including theft, ritualistic murder, animal familiars, and other nefarious events. The closer they come to the truth, the more dangerous it becomes for them all, particularly Whyborne, who is very nearly loses himself forever. Fortunately Griffin's undying love, trust, and belief in Whyborne put him in a position to right a horrible wrong, and once again, in a position to save Widdershins.

This story is beyond exciting and intense with several imaginative twists and turns that seriously surprised me. As with her other books in the series, Jordan's story-telling ability continues to awe me. Her ability to create solutions to seemingly unsolvable issues is impressive. There are several story lines that I cannot all explore here, but trust me when I say Jordan has outdone herself. From the humor involved in Whyborne's reaction to Griffin's new automobile and his real fear that Griffin is going to kill them all with his reckless driving; to the moving example of Griffin's love for Whyborne, believing him against all odds, it's a book Whyborne and Griffin fans will absolutely love. For those new to the series, you are missing an exceptional reading adventure and I suggest starting at the first book in the series, 'Widdershins', and join those who already know and love these two exceptional men and their whacky, sometimes frightening world. Thank you, so much, Jordan, for another awesome reading experience with my favorite guys, Whyborne and Griffin. I'm looking forward to the next story. Originally reviewed at Rainbow Book Reviews.

These Whyborne & Griffin books just seem to keep getting better and better!

I have a few authors who I consider my very favorite ones to read, and I never miss one of their books. Jordan L. Hawk is one of them. I get giddy fanboy whenever I see she has a new one coming out. I was literally doing the happy dance the other day when Dani sent me over this advanced copy for review!

This morning I finally had time to sit down and start reading. Not surprisingly, at the time I’m writing this review, I just finished turning the last page. No breaks. I never even stopped to make COFFEE this morning! You owe me coffee Ms. Hawk!

I’m really loving this latest installment in the Whyborne & Griffin books. I particularly enjoyed that it was set back in the town of Widdershins, as a nice change from the guys’ globe-trotting in the last few books. Evil has once again come to Widdershins, Massachusetts. And of course Whyborne and Griffin are both right in the middle of it!

This time we have something odd going on. Things have disappeared from the museum that no one should even have knowledge of…unless they work for the museum? People are wandering around with their recent memories wiped. And now someone is killing people and ripping out their hearts…the human sacrifice bodies are starting to pile up!

Who is behind this latest evil incursion? I’ll be honest, I guessed part way through the book and felt totally full of my bad self / sleuth skills when I was correct!

This may be one of my favorites of the series so far. I love how Jordan is keeping up with technology as the story progresses. I, of course, had to Google the 1901 Oldsmobile Curved Dash automobile! Adding it, and the newly available telephone, made the story more real world and reminded me of things we take for granted that weren’t common in that day and age. I really like Whyborne’s resistance to change as well.

My final comment on the storyline…I might be imagining it, but readers…let me know what you think after you read it. I’m thinking that I’m picking up something developing between a certain fairly shy museum secretary, who has a penchant for puce scarves…and Whyborne’s sister Persephone??? I, for one, am hoping so. Poor Miss Parkhurst deserves some love too! Lord knows, she isn’t ever going to get it from chasing Whyborne around!

I recommend this book. It is obvious there is more to come…and I can’t wait! If you haven’t read the entire series, get to it…now! If you’ve been reading them as eagerly as I have, hit one click and buy this latest installment today. You can thank me for the advice later. :-)

NUMBER 7 A WINNER!!!!

Jordan L. Hawk has been entertaining readers with her Wyborne and Griffin Series and at Maelstrom book 7 ; she still has me reeling. Our main characters have expanded from the meeting of Percival Endicott Wybornne and Griffin Flaherty. These two have had some harrowung excapades in this series, yet the spark and lve has grown stronger and stronger. During which they have secretly wedded before God and friends. They have been through very intense death defying events and we now open their newest adventure.

Wybornes’s best friend Christine and her fianc� Iskander have been invited by his father Niles to have their wedding at Whyborne House. Percival is suspicious by a number of things his father has done lately with such generosity even giving Griffin stock. Things start happening by a disappearance of a map, a murder, a disappearance of a codex, another murder.....Meanwhile Griffin has also been hired and in the end they all wind up with all roads leading to the same mystery and all of them racing to save the Ladysmith Museum, the town of Widdershins along with Percival and Griffin, and Christine and Iksander! Wow leaves me breathless !!!

I loved seeing Whyborne’s sister Persephone involved in the wedding plans. I loved finally seeing Nile’s Whyborne see his son. The story was another great addition to this series. I not only love the adventure, the action, the majcik but the sexy hidden love between Ival and Griffin. This is a wonderful series not to be missed,,,,

Fraser Simpson is a high school mathematics teacher and puzzle constructor living in Toronto. He specializes in cryptic crosswords, has written several books of puzzles, and is a proud member of the National Puzzlers’ League.

You are Wrong!

We've bought this a couple times, but are a bit disappointed this year. There have been at least half a dozen pages where the answers are actually wrong. By that I don't mean that I just disagreed with their answer, but rather that they had the completely wrong answer. For example one of the "burnt matches" answers wasn't even the same picture as the actual puzzle. It is obvious nobody proofread an actual printed deck.

It needs work

I like the idea of this calendar a lot, but the editors did a poor job making sure the puzzles are solvable. On many occasions I have struggled with a puzzle only to flip to the solution and see that it is to an entirely different puzzle, or there is a typo on the puzzle that was corrected for the solution. This just makes the calendar frustrating to use and always has me second guessing whether the puzzles is being extra tricky, or it is just wrong. They also use the term "common words" or everyday words for words no one uses regularly.

We buy one every year to help us wake up in the morning. It works. Most puzzles can be worked out, and only a few are too obscure, or require specialized knowledge. Great "brain-awakener".

This collection of essays makes easy but critical reading for those wishing to understand the resistance to and methods used to deny the validity of climate science. The authors are fair minded enough to acknowledge that Exxon made some significant contributions to climate science and as a company, were seeking to deal with the problem of increased carbon emissions. But, as the title suggests, the corporate leadership the company demonstrated in the late 1970s ran up against the challenge of falling profits, and so the company did not take the high road. For this they need to be publicly exposed, as this book does.

An interesting dimension for me is in the divergent cultures within Exxon at the time. Major companies are rarely ideological monoliths; they are usually collections of competing agendas. However, it is clear that the environmental responsibility message did not filter through to the next generation of corporate executives, much to the shame of Exxon. It could have taken the road to corporate leadership but failed. It is not just the company who is worse off for this, it is the colossal task facing the world community to stem the tide of climate damaging emissions that Exxon, and companies like them, are largely responsible for.

The message of the book: Exxon knew that its emissions would raise the temperature of the planet, and they knew that this could cause enormous challenges, if not make the world uninhabitable for the types of societies we have built. But they took the cheap road and failed in moral leadership. Shame on them.

Final comment on the book; because it is a collection of essays, the narrative does not flow as well as it could. Therefore as a literary piece it is not going to win any prizes. But as an expose, it is very good.

A must read for climate skeptics and anyone interested in climate justice

This book is extremely important. Exxon's role in climate denial and the irrevocable harm that they have knowingly been a leading contributor to must become common knowledge. As legal action is brought to this company public awareness and pressure will play a key role in what could be a pivotal moment in the history of the fossil fuel industry and a possible watershed moment for climate justice.

The fitting conclusion to a great series

I received a review copy of How to Fight a Dragon's Fury a few weeks before the book actually went on sale. In true spoiler sport fashion, I flipped to the back of the book and read the epilogue. I did the same thing when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out, and I'll do it in the future with other series too. I have to know if a series I have invested myself in is going to end well or if I'm going to be disappointed. I am here to tell you that the twelfth and final installment of Cressida Cowell's popular series did not disappoint.

From the time the series started in 2004, the books have been growing in length. How to Train Your Dragon was a mere 224 pages compared to the behemoth 472 pages that is How to Fight a Dragon's Fury. The main plot lines of this final book involve crowning the King of the Wilderwest (Hiccup Horrendous or Alvin the Treacherous) and a showdown between dragonkind (led by the dragon Furious) and humankind. The dragons have rebelled and believe that they must destroy humanity or risk being destroyed themselves. Only one boy, Hiccup, believes that the world is not black and white. He believes that the two races can coexist and there can be peace between the two. The problem is that he has to convince the enormous dragon Furious this. He also has to do this while being undermined and plotted against by Alvin and his mother the witch.

The writing in this book was beautiful at times and made me forget I was reading aimed at a young boy. "Love never dies [ . . . ] Once we love, we cannot forget, though the flesh hardens around the wound that once bled, though it be buried in one hundred years of chains and twisted around with cruel, growing thorns of the choking forest." I think this quote sums up the series. This is more than an adventure series about riding and fighting dragons. This is a coming of age series, and it's also a love story. Don't mistake me. It's not your traditional love story. It's about a boy whose heart was so pure that he saw the world not as it was but as it could be, as it should be. Peace. Harmony. Love.

However, as great a character as Hiccup is, my favorite character in the series grew to be Fishlegs. To reference Harry Potter, Fishlegs is the Neville of this series. He started off a pathetic, little boy whose character and our knowledge of the character grew with each book. In this final installment, he not only comes into his own, but discovers who his father is. I won't spoil it for you, but their interaction will make you proud of Fishlegs. The Epilogue at the end of the book was a nice touch, and it was written by an adult Hiccup. In it, he reflects on his life and whether or not he was a success or failure. He also explains why we cannot see dragons anymore, but assures the readers that they are still present, just hiding. Lastly, he encourages readers to make the world a better place, in case the dragons ever do come out of hiding. I'm sad to see the series end, but I appreciate the author not milking the series and dragging it out indefinitely. I'll definitely pass this series on to my son when he is old enough, and I look forward to reading it with him when the time comes!

Best series ever- sorry to see it end

This series is by far the best we've read, and like so many others have noted, my son and I are so sad that there will be no more adventures with Hiccup and his crew. The books are SO much better than the movies and very different. We have hoped for a long time now that they might make movies from the books- true to the characters and stories in them. How much fun would naughty little Toothless (always pooping where he's not meant to and eating things he shouldn't) and the wildly clever Camacazi, and the crude and crass Gobber....it is a mystery why it hasn't already been done!
