Complication
Narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Magistrate, Mira travels west, toward the coast. With three weakened human fugitives accompanying her, she searches for the mythical land of Sanctuary.�
After encountering a pack of wolf shifters, headed by the charismatic--and brazen--Stryker, Mira learns that Sanctuary is real after all. Caldera Grove: home of the Otherkin. Hidden in the mouth of a dormant volcano, it has protected its residents from humans since the early days following the great cataclysm. For Mira-- a vampire-- Caldera Grove is a land of peace; an escape from the relentless persecution of the humans who once enslaved her, and an end to the daily struggle and bloodshed of being a gladiator.�

LOVE IT!

Dystopian movies, TV shows, and books are my new favorite "thing"
I guess that makes me pretty basic since that's what's in right now anyway, but there's something about it. The real world, but worse, even as they are trying to make it better. Advancements can't save us. It's always interesting to see how different authors play out the whole "what if" scenarios.
Add some vampires into the mix, and I'm sold, because I wasn't over the first trend before the new one came in (wink).
The world building in this was EPIC and the plot kept me on the edge of my seat from page one. Salidas really proved herself as a writer with this series. This novel was gritty, dark, and exciting, and I highly recommend it!

A whole new end of the world!

Who knew the end of the world would bring such change?!? The end of civilization as we know it, this is a dystopian vampire battling treat! When the humans utilize the vampires "kryptonite" to threaten their very existence everything changes. The "top dog" is no longer earned by strength but who has the tools to bring you to your knees. Sometimes you just have to play along as survival is not guaranteed, even if you can beat the others, thanks to the Elite calling all of the shots. This is a whole new world where weaknesses will end you, playing fair could kill you, & trusting anyone is simply not an option. But...then there is always someone who will surprise you. ;*}
If you enjoy stories involving gladiator type battles, rulers enforcing their own agenda, vampires who are true savages, & one warrior determined to break free then you must read this book!

Be forewarned about the ending before you start it!!

Review: This novel was definitely an interesting take on vampires and the paranormal genre. Basically, it's a dark, dystopian tale about a world in which humans have subjugated vampires, forcing them to life in prisons and engage in life or death battles in a gladiator arena for their own perverted amusements. Mira is tough chick - spending day in and day out fighting against her circumstances and those of her people. Lucien, on the other hand, I felt as if we barely got to know before the ending of the book. Which brings me to my main point of contention with this book - the ending. There's a cliffhanger, and then there is just those dump-you-right-in-the-middle-of-a-scene endings that totally rub me the wrong way - leaving you unfulfilled and just thoroughly ticked off. This one is the latter. Sure, I'm confident the next book picks right up where this one leaves up, but there is nothing I hate more than an unfulfilled ending to a book. And the end of this one was enough to almost ruin the whole book for me. To be honest, I would have rated it higher if not for the ending - so just be forewarned about that before starting it!
